2 – Day Contact Improvisation Workshop with Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Contact Improvisation is a movement form that offers opportunities to experience heightened states of being – times when we feel fearless and alive. There are no recipes to create these moments, but training can lay the foundation for physical and emotional breakthroughs. In this workshop we are specifically interested in developing our reflexes, our coordination, and the capacity to continually recycle our mental and physical energies back into the dancing. At the core is the commitment to staying with the modulation of tone and weight in the body – so that the touch remains alive.

Come with questions, energy and commitment to playful, imaginative dancing.

10am-12pm $115An Eco-poetic Approach to Dance Improvisation and PerformanceIn this movement workshop we will explore awareness and intention through the development of perceptual acuity in relationship to our inner and outer landscapes. We will examine the delicate relationships between our poetic imagination and our sensory systems. The basis of my approach is that composition and performance are ecologically rooted acts. Our imagination grows from where and how we exist. Movement, story, image and gesture are imbedded in the relationships that are evolving all around us. Come ready to dance, perceive, perform and imagine.

We are finishing our wonderful time here in Cluj. Thank you to Kinga and Fero for a great experience. The workshop and Jam is a great way to check out this part of the world if you have never been and it is a chance to dance with some wonderful people. One special part of the festival is “nature day” when the entire group travels by bus to the countryside. We worked outside, hiked, talked, slept, played volleyball and ping pong. At night there was a huge bonfire followed my made to order CREPES cooked outside under the stars. It was all very special and we recommend it. Check out TransContact 2012.

We are in day 5 of the Chicago Improvisation Festival. We saw a great show last night at Links Hall with Rebecca Bryant, Bebe Miller and other midwest improvisation artists. Nancy Stark Smith, Ray Chung and Mike Vargas are performing tonight along with The Architects and Ensemble V. Tomorrow night we present our work in progress, Utopia Parkway. This is our 4th week on the road and we are a bit weary but the festival has given us energy and we are looking forward to the next few days. And then HOME.

Chris and I finished our 5 day workshop here in Moab Utah. It was a lovely collection of dancers from Colorado, California, New York, Chicago and more. We focused on principles of Contact Improvisation, ideas of gesture, expanding how we use our spines, awareness, and ease. We had several nice “non dance” experiences as well: meals together, a discussion, and hike to the slickrock area of Moab. Thank you to Gretchen Spiro for her wonderful organizing and facilitating. Thanks also to Todd, Alicia, Steve, Lauraina, Uncle Roo, Carly and all the WEX people for your work.

We are staying in Moab through Sunday to be jam hosts at the Moab Jam. We look forward to some more dancing and lots more nature.
